Description & Building Alterations

On this site there was originally a 3-story brick building built prior to 1853, as shown on a historic map. It, like its one-time neighbors at 135 and 133 Avenue D, was a single family dwelling above first-floor shops.

Between 1916 and 1923, the one-story rear building was constructed, as shown in historic maps published those years. By the 1940s, the second floor of the now-demolished front building was used for a machine shop. In the mid-1940s the buildings were owned by the former Wheatsworth Bakery, then the National Biscuit Company, and in 1942 the second floor of the front building was removed. The remaining one-story section was used by the bakery as a loading dock for their factory. The 1940’s and 1980’s tax photos show that single story front building still intact. The Department of Buildings’ site lists a demolition permit dated to 1987, which is likely when the front building was removed, leaving the one-story rear building that stands on this lot today.
