Description & Building Alterations

This four story pre-law tenement was built 1846-47 replacing a shop that had been on the site since 1842, according to the property tax records.  The 1853 map illustrated a brick manufactory and the 1862 map identifies the building as a brick dwelling and “Copper Smith.”

An outhouse was erected at the rear of the property in 1905. The tenement’s cornice has been removed, its window lintels have been shaved, and its storefront has been heavily modified. While it is unclear when these alterations occurred, they happened before the 1980s tax photo was taken (see sidebar).
