Description & Building Alterations

In 2018, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) approved a new building at Nos 119-121 Second Avenue, click HERE. The original building and its neighbors at 121 and 123 Second Avenue were destroyed in a devastating fire that occurred on Thursday, March 26, 2015. The fire was the result of an explosion that went off in the basement of 121 Second Avenue, killing two people and displacing all residents and businesses.

The construction date of the original building is unclear. Construction on this lot occurred in 1886, but it is speculated that this was not the erection of a new building but rather an alteration of a preexisting building.  The building was raised one story in height in 1899, at which time a store occupied the basement and one family lived on each floor.
