118 Avenue C | Block : 377 | Lot #5
Description & Building Alterations
According to tax records, this rowhouse dates to 1848. Though it is difficult to tell due to the lack of surviving ornament, the building likely originally featured Greek Revival style elements. Originally a single-family home, the building would have had a stoop and a cornice. By 1903 the building had already been raised to a full four stories (it was likely originally three stories with an attic) and the number of apartments was increased from three to four. It also had a ground-floor store. Records indicate that in this year a rear addition was built by owner Z. Springer of 311 East 8th Street.
Fire escapes were added in 1938 by owner Louis Rosenberg. At some point, the ground floor store was converted to an apartment.
