189 East 2nd Street | Block : 397 | Lot #26
Description & Building Alterations
While a small structure was sited on this lot as early as 1839, it was not until 1872 that the building was completed as it stands today. The window lintels are in the Neo-Grec style with incised details, but likely were originally full window enframements as opposed to just the lintels and sills that exist today. Additionally, the second-floor lintels have been completely shaved down, leaving only the centered incised detail. The ground floor, which once would have held a raised stoop entrance, has an interesting arched cornice separating it visually from the floors above. The cast iron posts, now painted bright blue, on either side of the building would have been from an early storefront, if not original to the 1872 conversion.
