Description & Building Alterations

Situated on the southeast corner of Avenue B and East 10th Street, this 5-story brick tenement building was constructed between 1867 and 1884 according to historic maps.  As early as 1853, the site originally housed two row houses and it is difficult to ascertain if the present tenement was built as a new build or as an alteration.  The simple, classical facade is given interest by the addition of brownstone beltcourses, lintels and sills which have since been painted black.  The corner of the building is a 45 degree angle that is capped with a cast iron oriel on the fifth floor.

The Avenue B facade cornice features a triangular pediment that is supported visually on two pairs of pilasters that flanking the central two bays of window on the fourth and fifth floors.  Likely the cornice and metal work of both the oriel and ground floor shops would have been painted brown to match the natural color of the stone trim.

Like several of its neighbors, in the early 20th century there was a bakery located in the building.
