Description & Building Alterations

This is a vacant lot as of February 2025. It is anticipated that a new building will be constructed spanning this and the adjacent lots on either side, but plans have yet to be filed with the NYC Department of Buildings.

Demolished in 2024, the previous building on this lot was a four-story brick row house built at the same time as Nos. 60 and 62 Third Avenue, between 1838-39. Each was built as a three-story building and had a fourth story added around the turn of the 20th century. The original owner of No. 58 was James E. Hills.

The merchant tailor Frederick Yung moved his eighteen-year-old, and rapidly growing, business to 58 Third Avenue in 1883. According to New York’s Great Industries, published two years later, Yung’s enterprise was “one of the largest and most prominent tailoring establishments on Third Avenue.”
