151 Second Avenue; 151-153 Second Avenue | Block : 465 | Lot #50
Description & Building Alterations
This new law tenement was designed by Bernstein & Bernstein in 1904 to house 29 families over ground-floor shops. The six story, seven bay wide building features splayed lintels on the sixth story and on the second through fourth stories on the middle three window bays. The outer two windows of the second through fourth stories feature pedimented and arched window lintels and elaborate stone surrounds. As it is a midblock building, it includes indentations in its footprint to meet the “new law” requirements.
Brothers Michael and Mitchell Bernstein were in partnership from 1903 to 1911, after which they operated separate practices. They are known as prolific tenement designers.
