Description & Building Alterations

According to tax records, this rowhouse was constructed in 1844. The oversized window surrounds, unusual for a rowhouse of this size and age, were likely added in the decades after it was built (as was the bracketed cornice). It would have also originally featured a stoop.

The earliest Department of Building files available date to 1907 when owner J. Finger of 152 Norfolk Street altered the building by removing and rebuilding the front and rear walls from the basement to the first story and constructing a rear addition (this is likely when the stoop was removed).  Documentation of the use of the building filed with this application is conflicting; some documents indicate that it was used as a private residence while others state that it was a vacant office and tenement.  By 1927 the building was used as a store and residence.

Historic photos dating from the 1980’s show a grocery on the ground floor.
