Description & Building Alterations

Like its neighboring building, 212 East 14th Street was built for Gerard Stuyvesant in 1855 and was also clad in brownstone. While most of the original Neo-Grec details have been removed, the building still retains its pressed-metal cornice. Likely built as a single family or possibly two family dwelling over ground-floor shops, by 1884 the building housed five families over shops. The front-stoop was removed as a result of the widening of East 14th Street in 1911. The small, 3-bay wide fenestration was replaced with large, single openings likely in 1935 though it is hard to date them since the windows themselves have been replaced.
