237 East 12th Street | Block : 468 | Lot #43
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story brownstone residential building with an Italianate cornice and raised-stoop entrance would have also had projecting window lintels and sills when it was constructed. While the building originally held apartments, possibly as few as one per floor, as was the case throughout the 1920s, in 1940 it was converted to a single-room occupancy hotel with six rooms per floor. This drastic change in occupancy highlights the change, and even decline, of the neighborhood. By 1966 it was converted back into an apartment building with two apartments per floor.
