299 East 10th Street | Block : 404 | Lot #56
Description & Building Alterations
This four-story building was constructed in 1846 for original owner Moses Chamberlin, Jr., and designed by Joseph Trench.
The three-bay wide building was originally designed in the transitional Greek Revival/Italianate style, and according to alteration plans filed by architect Louis F. Heinecke, the building’s peaked roof was removed and the upper story was raised in 1893. The Queen
Anne-style cornice, lintels, and sills may date to that period. Replacing elements associated with previous styles with Queen Anne elements was common in the East Village during the late 19th century. The windows have molded iron lintels and sills, and the bracketed and modillioned cornice consists of a raised center.
George Law, a prominent American financier, lived at No. 299 East 10th Street when the 1880 Census was completed.
