Description & Building Alterations

This five-story, Queen Anne-style old law tenement was constructed in 1891 by architects Schneider & Herter for owner Charles Ruff. The neighboring building at 97 1/2 East 7th Street was constructed at the same time with similar detailing.

The present facade features rich decorations throughout, an ornate bracketed galvanized-iron cornice, projecting pilasters from the second to the fifth stories, round-arched openings at second and fourth stories, segmental-arched window openings at first story, and round-arched entrance with a portico featuring a decorated entablature and columns. A historic fire escape is found at the center two bays from the second to fifth stories .
