90 East 10th Street | Block : 555 | Lot #124
Description & Building Alterations
This three-story brick building was originally constructed in 1845 for owner Moses E. Arment. From 1952 until 1962 this was the second home of the Tanager Gallery, and from 1962 until 1965 it was the second home of the Area Gallery, which had previously been located at No. 80 East 10th Street. The building was essential for providing an artists’ community and a path to public recognition. The 10th Street area served as home and studio space for over a dozen artists including Willem de Kooning, Michael Goldberg, Philip Guston and Esteban Vicente.
In past photos, it is evident that this building was constructed at the same time as Lot 123 because it shares a roofline, cornice, and line of windows, lintels, and sills. The building has a completely new façade today, but retains its historic massing. This is the only building of the Tenth Street Galleries that is still standing.
