79-89 Avenue D; 749-751 East 6th Street | Block : 376 | Lot #33
Description & Building Alterations
A 12 story mixed use building constructed beginning in 2016 stands on this lot. This lot previously contained a one story commercial building that was the result of various alterations and demolitions over the course of many decades.
Previously the lot housed a two story brick building at No. 81 that was built prior to 1870, the year it was enlarged by the addition of one floor. The owner of the building was Gonlish Nitzel. At the time it housed two families and a store. Building permits from 1890 indicate that there were two buildings (79 and 81 Avenue D) at this location, a three story smokehouse and a two story, two family residence. That year an extension was added to the smokehouse to accommodate a stable and the residential building was also modified. In 1915 demolition permits were filed for four buildings at 83-89 Avenue D by owner Morris Morrissey to be replaced by a one story garage. In 1948 the garage was replaced by a Safeway food market. At that time photos were taken of the buildings that show late 19
th century buildings identified as 79-89 Avenue D (that may not have been demolished in 1915). An additional permits related to the grocery store states that at 79 and 81 Avenue D there is a stable and smoke house and at 83-89 Avenue D there is a food market on the ground floor with three vacant stories above which were to be demolished. In 1953 the facade of the building was refaced with “Zourite,” a porcelain-enamel coated aluminum. In 1962 the building was again altered with the removal of one of three sets of doors form the front of the building and the removal of some of the plate glass and its replacement with concrete block.
