746 East 9th Street | Block : 378 | Lot #30
Description & Building Alterations
There has been a low-scale building on this lot since at least the mid-19th century when this section of the East Village was known as the Dry Dock district. A 1932 photo taken by Charles von Urban (see sidebar) shows that the current building existed at that time, though it had a wood clapboard facade and several wood windows and a door. It served as a builders supply warehouse that sold materials such as cement, lime, and plaster. The photo also provides a glimpse of tenement buildings (with ground floor storefronts and signs in Hebrew) that once stood beside this building.
The facade of the current building has existed since at least the mid-1980s, according to the tax photo (see sidebar).
