Description & Building Alterations

Originally, this site was four lots with three tenement buildings and an industrial shop.  Lot 39, on the corner of Avenue D and East 9th Street, was built in 1899 and designed by Michael Bernstein as a 6-story brick tenement building with stores on the first floor and housing 25 families above that.  Lots 41 and 42, the two easterly lots on East 9th Street, were built in 1901 and designed by Schueider & Herman to house 28 families each on seven floors.  Lot 43 was a 4-story brick shop that likely pre-dated the tenement buildings.

Classified as a factory by 1937, the 7-story building on lot 42 was demolished in that year.  The building on lot 43 was being used as tenement when it was demolished in 1962.  In 1973, conditions in the tenement on lot 41 were considered unlivable and the building was subsequently demolished.  The corner lot, number 39, was the only building to survive until 1997 when the current building was constructed, as determined by its Department of Buildings Profile.
