Description & Building Alterations

Built in 1900, the 6-story tall, 8-bay wide brick building at 735 East 9th Street was designed by Frank Miller and built by Henry M. Tosterin for William P. Youngs & Brother.  The factory built wooden packing boxes and barrels. Several surrounding buildings acted as support functions for the Youngs & Brother box factory including the sawmill at 428 East 10th Street, the factory buildings at 432 and 436 East 10th Street, the shop at 743 East 9th Street and the former building at 741 East 9th Street. In 1938 the company went bankrupt and the building was sold and used as lofts.

The building retains much of its original details, including the simple stone window lintels and brick details.  The white stone of the lintels and sills and the belt courses between the first and second floors and second and third floors provide contrast to the red brick.  Deeply recessed, round-arched windows and brick, blind-arched cornice provide a point of interest on the sixth floor.  The central 4-bays are slightly recessed breaking up the large facade.
