No. 56 Avenue C is one of four buildings constructed by E. V. Loew in 1872 for $12,000 each. Originally constructed with brownstone fronts and galvanized iron cornices, the buildings, including this one at 56 Avenue C, are faced with a painted cementious coating.

In 1909 the outdoor water closets were replaced with indoor facilities by owner Gussie A. Engel of 218-220 East 11th Street.
