54 East 4th Street | Block : 459 | Lot #12
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story with basement and store tenement was built in 1878 and designed by the architect Frederick W. Klemt, who was responsible for the construction of many such tenements throughout the neighborhood. The five upper floors each contained four apartments and the basement contained two rear apartments. There were also two street-facing storefronts.
The building’s original entrance would have been at the top of a center stoop which was later removed. The entrance is now at street level. It features a stone door hood with cast-iron piers, stone window lintels in molded or pedimented shapes, and a bracketed cornice with the initials “H.B.” for its developer Herman Bruns inscribed at the center.
