535 East 5th Street; 535-541 East 5th Street | Block : 401 | Lot #46
Description & Building Alterations
This mostly new building, designed using historicizing details like the incised lintels and Renaissance Revival-inspired cornice, was built 1999-2001. The design by architect Peter L. Woll combined the three existing pre-law tenements into one large building. Although structurally parts of the three old buildings remain, no trace can be found on the exterior facade. The buildings were transformed by New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) into affordable housing.
This lot was once part of William B. Astor’s holdings and was leased out to various people between 1850-1875.
