533 East 6th Street | Block : 402 | Lot #49
Description & Building Alterations
This five story tenement building was likely built in 1863 along with its neighbors and functions as a six-story building after a 1966 alteration that put the entrance at the basement level. The lot was once part of William B. Astor’s holdings between 1850-1875 and was leased out to various people. The upper four stories have four double-hung window bays while the original first floor and the basement floor both have three bays of doubled windows. The basement floor has its entrance in the leftmost bay below the street level. The original cornice is intact, consisting of a wood molding above brick corbelling. The lintels have been replaced or repaired with a cement coating but they still maintain their original segmental outline. There is also a small window opening in the very center of the four upper stories that would not have been original to the building at the time of construction. It likely indicates the location of added bathrooms.
