Description & Building Alterations
406-408 East 10th Street is a New-Law tenement built in 1903 by architect George Frederick Pelham. It is 6-stories tall and 6-bays wide with a central entrance. The current use of the building reflects that of its historical; apartments made up the top five floors and shops are on the ground level. The building originally housed 22 families on the five floors.
The Neo-Classical building is made of red and white brick and stone. The first and sixth bays on floors three through 5 are accented with white bricks set to resemble coynes. The second and sixth floors feature stone belt courses and frame the floors middle floors. Originally, all the windows were topped with a stone lintel, but today only the lintels on the right-side of the building facade remain. In 1935, the entrance stoop was shortened and the store fronts altered. The building would have originally had a metal cornice which has been removed.
From 1965-75, beat poet Allen Ginsberg resided in the building.
