502 East 11th Street | Block : 404 | Lot #5
Description & Building Alterations
This four-story, three-bay wide brick building was constructed in 1846 for owner Joseph Hewlett. In 1875, show windows were added, turning the tenement into a residential and commercial space.
The façade features a highly decorated white cornice with leaf motifs and the frieze consists of shell brackets, floral roundels and extended modillions. The cornice is further topped by a parapet-type carved feature. Other Queen Anne features include the heavy lintels and sills. Although they appear original, these are all later replacements, having been installed during the 1880s when the Queen Anne style was fashionable.
By 1926, the building may have been renovated again at ground level when it was owned by the Church of Mary Help of Christians. By the 1960s, the building was fully utilized as a residential space, with one apartment per floor.
