Description & Building Alterations

Like its neighbors on either side, 49 Avenue B is a three-story brick row house likely constructed in 1842. These houses are likely Italianate remodelings of Greek Revival houses. According to the Department of Buildings, a back house exists on the rear of this lot. The back house was altered in 1905 when water closets were installed on each floor and the window openings on the front of the backhouse were enlarged. Plans from that date suggest that the back house spans the width of Lot 7 and Lot 8 but whether or not that is still the case today is difficult to discern. No. 49 Avenue B retains a historic cornice, window lintels with decorative brackets, and star-shaped tie rods.
