416-418 East 11th Street | Block : 438 | Lot #7502
Description & Building Alterations
This seven-story condo with 21 dwelling units was built in 2000-04, replacing two four-story tenements previously on site. The current apartment building features projecting side bays, patterned parapet, hooded lintels, and Art Deco-style base front.
In 1908-1909, Antonio Parisi’s puppet theater was located at 418 East 11th Street. According to a 1909 Collier’s magazine issue, the theater was accessed through the tenement’s dark hall, past the rear open court, and up a flight of stairs that led into a back brick building “the size of an outhouse.” The 1969 book The puppet theatre in America: a history, 1524-1948 describes the theater further, stating that Mama and Papa Parisi read the performance lines as their three sons operated the puppets. Gas jets were used to light the stage.
