41 First Avenue | Block : 444 | Lot #38
Description & Building Alterations
A five story brick tenement building stands at No. 41 First Avenue, and it is identical to the building at No. 39 First Avenue. This building was constructed in 1867 for owner Louis Heller. New storefronts were installed in 1889. The building was to be occupied by stores and tenements.
The four-bay wide facade is decorated with an Italianate bracketed cornice, arched window lintels and bracketed sills. Portions of the cornice above the ground floor are still visible, although in poor condition.
Norman Mailer lived here from 1951 to 1952, and wrote his controversial novel, The Deer Park, while living at No. 41 First Avenue (see sidebar for more info).
