Description & Building Alterations
One building constructed in 1840 and owned by Peter Stuyvesant originally sat on lots 7, 8, 9, and 10 of this block. It became six separated buildings between 1853 and 1862, three of which remain at 40½, 42, and 42½.
No. 40½ St. Mark’s Place is a five-story tenement. Similar to its neighbor at 42 St. Mark’s Place, this facade features a bracketed cornice with paneled frieze and a two-story front addition with patterned brickwork above second-story windows.
