364 East 8th Street | Block : 377 | Lot #14
Description & Building Alterations
A six-story Old Law tenement with ground floor stores once stood here. It was built in 1899 and designed by Schneider & Herter for Leopold Kaufmann. DOB records show that the building was still standing in 1964; however, by the late 1970s it was a vacant lot used as a garden.
It is now part of the community garden known as the Marty Celic Fireman’s Memorial Garden. The garden pays homage to the memory of Celic (1952-1977), a young member of Ladder Company 18 who lost his life fighting a fire in the tenement next door at nos. 358-360.
