According to tax assessment records, this building was constructed in 1849-1850 as the backhouse of the building that currently sits on lot 42 (No. 219 First Avenue). In 1848, the lot was vacant and valued at $1,500. By 1850 the value had jumped to $6,000 and two houses existed on the lot. It is four stories in height, three bays wide, and clad in brick. Most of the stone lintels and sills are intact, and the original cornice is also intact with modillions, brackets, and raised panels at the frieze. The store front has been modernized.
