336 East 5th Street | Block : 446 | Lot #26
Description & Building Alterations
This six-story tenement building was built in 1898 for owner James L. Buttenweiser, and was designed by George Frederick Pelham, who was responsible for building many other tenements in East Village. The tenement would be occupied by 22 families and two stores.
A map of East Village art galleries from 1983 (see sidebar) shows that Christminster was at this location.
The facade features elaborate window enframements, arched and horizontal window lintels, ornamental beltcourses, and a bracketed cornice. The first floor storefront appears to have been altered.
