Description & Building Alterations

This five story brick building was constructed c. 1855 by original owner Adam Sander. There is a backhouse in the rear of the lot.

The Italianate facade features a cornice that consists of large corbels and a geometric frieze. The molded galvanized iron lintels and projecting sills are in a later Italianate style. The upper story lintels have been removed. Recently, the entrance of the building was moved from the center of the façade to the right bay; this once-centralized entrance was originally utilized as a storefront in the 1870s.

Poet and writer Lewis Warsh lived in the building for a few months in 1964 before moving uptown. He began writing poetry and fiction in his early teens and first published his poems in 1965. Warsh would later become one of the principal members of the second generation of the New York School poets.
