Description & Building Alterations

This three-story with basement tenement was originally built in 1853, as part of a group of row houses at Nos. 313-321 East 6th Street. It seems that these single-family row houses were converted into the existing tenements since the building footprints do not change on the historic maps. The conversion into tenements occurred before 1897.

The present facade features a rusticated brownstone surface at the base, molded brownstone window lintels and rectangular sills, and a bracketed roof cornice with a paneled frieze. The entrance of No. 321 is located on a stoop at the first story, with flanking pilasters and molded entablature above.

Property deeds show that No. 321 was owned by film maker Paul Morrissey (best known for his work with Andy Warhol) between 1969, and 1975. Several sources claim it was also owned by Warhol but we have not been able to confirm that via primary sources. However, biographies of Warhol do say that he  bought two properties on the Lower East Side in 1970.
