Description & Building Alterations

Although this is a recently constructed building, it echoes a modernist Art Deco style with geometric shapes mimicking lintels and a cornice. Historically, a stable once stood here. Its demolition in 1941 was done by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal Agency under FDR that provided jobs to the unemployed.

What is the Building Blocks Project

The site explores the area generally considered today as the East Village: from a northern border of 14th Street to a southern border of Houston Street, Avenue D in the east to 4th Avenue/the Bowery to the west.
