26 St. Mark’s Place | Block : 463 | Lot #22
Description & Building Alterations
This pre-law tenement was constructed in 1875 for Eliza Koehler. The six story, four bay wide building features commercial on the ground floor with simple stone lintels and bracketed sills on the windows. It likely once featured a cornice at the roof line that has been removed, much like its neighbor at 24 St. Mark’s (and many other buildings in New York City), though it was removed before the 1980s tax photo was taken.
During the 1970s, this building was home to the shop Knobkerry, a boutique which sold African and Indian goods and owned by Sara Penn (click HERE). Later the shop moved to SoHo and eventually to Tribeca.
