253 East 7th Street | Block : 377 | Lot #7505
Description & Building Alterations
A three story residential building constructed in 1843 for James Spencer was demolished in 2015. In 2017, a new building permit was filed for the construction of the present six-story residential building designed by Issac and Stern Architects.
During the late 19th century and into the early 20th century, this was the home of Chamberlain Patrick Keenan, a prominent politician of the time. Keenan first held positions at Tammany Hall, after which he was elected Chamberlain. During his political career, he was a man known for keeping his word and for helping people in his area obtain political jobs. He was responsible for creating the “Political Row,” a series of row houses on East 7th Street where a number of political figures lived. Here resided, among others, two Justices of the Supreme Court: one from General Session, and Civil Justice Hoffman. Prior to demolition, no. 253 East 7th Street featured original brickwork, plain sills, cap-molded lintels, and an original cornice. The original stoop had been removed.
This was previously Lot 61.
