No. 240 East 2^nd Street was constructed in 1898 to the designs of Schneider & Herter. This Old Law tenement originally housed 22 families in apartments that were accessed by a stoop, which appears to have been removed in 1938. The building once held two basement-level stores; the entry to one of them was likely accessed by the steps that still exist to the right of the main entrance door. At some point, the building’s cornice was also removed.
