225 East 9th Street; 26 Stuyvesant St. | Block : 465 | Lot #60
Description & Building Alterations
This six-story building was constructed in 1891 for the Hebrew Technical Institute as a four-story structure and was designed by architects Pickering & Carter. It was occupied by the Baron Hirsch Fund Trade School through the early 20th century. This fund was set up by European-based Jewish philanthropists, the Baron and Baroness de Hirsch, to support Jewish immigrants in the United States by teaching them new trades and occupations. The fund was overseen by the United Hebrew Charities.
In 1901 an alteration permit was filed by the Hebrew Technical Institute, also overseen by the United Hebrew Charities, for 34-36 Stuyvesant Street and part of the alteration included connecting Nos. 34-36 to 225 East 9th Street, still occupied at this time by the Baron Hirsch Fund Trade School. The 1903 map shows the alteration complete as depicted in a sketch that accompanied the permit. Also evident in the 1903 map was that No. 225 was raised to six stories. Presumably, the facade was altered to its present-day appearance as part of this alteration.
The brick and stone building features classical details such as scrolled pediment above the door and keystones, decorative stone panels between windows, and a bracketed cornice above the fifth story.
