225 East 12th Street | Block : 468 | Lot #49
Description & Building Alterations
Built as one of a series of row houses on this street, 225 East 12th Street was constructed in 1852. While it was likely a designed in a transitional style between Greek Revival and Italianate, all that remains of the original details is the cornice. The brownstone lintels have been altered and the raised-stoop entrance and projecting entryway have been removed.
Beginning in 1886, the five story home was used as a boarding house along with its neighbor at 223 East 12th Street. At the time, the two buildings were connected, and between the two, there was room for 35 boarders. In 1940, 225 East 12th Street was converted back into apartments, with two apartments per floor.
