193 East 7th Street | Block : 390 | Lot #59
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story building was constructed in 1847 along with the buildings on lots 58, 60, and 61 for Richard Totten. It was originally four stories tall and had a cornice similar to the one at No. 195 East 7th Street.
It is unknown when the one floor addition was installed and the façade was modified; in the 1940s tax photo, the building was still four stories and had a storefront with large windows. The addition took place sometime between the 1940s and the 1980s, as the addition is visible in the 1980s tax photo.
Prior to 1905, the building was occupied by a club room and three families. The ground floor was converted in that year to be occupied by a store. The first story front wall was replaced. It is four bays wide at the first four floors and two bays at the fifth. It is clad in brick with stone lintels and sills and lacks any ornament.
