158 Loisaida Avenue; 158 Avenue C | Block : 379 | Lot #8
Description & Building Alterations
This 4-story, 3-bay wide building was originally built as two buildings. One was constructed in 1839 and the other in 1840. Strangely, the tax assessment records do not note a change in value between 1838 and 1839, though they do assert that a new building was constructed. Both combined residential housing over ground-floor shops. The ground floor, which still functions as commercial space, has been altered and the building’s cornice was removed along with the original brownstone window lintels and sills. The building has been stuccoed and painted multiple times, covering the original brownstone facade.
