160 East 3rd Street; 156-168 East 3rd Street | Block : 398 | Lot #8
Description & Building Alterations
Built in 1940 as Colonial Hall, this was designed as a modern apartment building in the Colonial Revival style. The Flemish bond brickwork and historicizing details, like the classically inspired main entrance, were meant to give the building a sense of grandeur and history, and also helped it to blend with neighboring structures. The building was designed to house 10 apartments per floor, and one first-floor apartment was to be used as a doctor’s office.
Prior to Colonial Hall, these seven lots housed several tenements and a church rectory for the nearby Church of the Most Holy Redeemer.
