Description & Building Alterations

The dormitory at 126-148 East 14th Street was built by New York University in 1999.

This NYU residence hall, called the Palladium, takes its name from the concert hall, movie theater, and nightclub that stood on this spot from the late 1920s until it was demolished in 1997. Initially called the Academy of Music (the original Academy of Music opera house was located across the way on the north side of 14th Street), the building was a popular rock concert venue from the 1960s through the 1970s. Such well-known bands as The Band, Iggy Pop, Kiss, The Grateful Dead, Iron Maiden, and The Clash performed here. The iconic cover of The Clash’s “London Calling” album, in fact, is a photograph of bassist Paul Simonon on stage at the Palladium.

By the mid-1980s it became a nightclub, founded by the co-owners of Studio 54, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager. The Palladium finally closed in 1997 and soon became the new Palladium residence hall that remains today.
