Description & Building Alterations
This tan five-story brick building shows characteristics of the Art Deco style through its brickwork and geometrical detailing. The second floor is characterized by a large central window. The top three floors are three bays wide and contain four windows apiece. According to permit records, these stories were later additions. 122 East 13th Street was originally owned by the New York Edison Company, which is now known as Con Edison. When it was converted into residences, the upper two stories were added.
Before this building was erected in 1922, the previous structure, also owned by the New York Edison Company, was a five-story loft and storage facility constructed of brick. The building was used as a powerhouse. In 1893, the building housed the office and saleroom of Alfred Dodge, a manufacturer of piano-felt and felt shoes.
