124 East 14th Street, 116-124 East 14th Street | Block : 559 | Lot #16
Description & Building Alterations
Now the site of a two-story commercial building, this lot once held the 2,267-seat City Theatre. Built in 1909-10 for William Fox, the theater housed both vaudeville and motion pictures and was one of the first large theaters to show movies in New York City, as stated in the Ridgewood Theater Building designation report. The French Renaissance-style theater was designed by Thomas W. Lamb, a prolific American theater specialist responsible for over three hundred theater buildings in the United States and around the world. The 14th Street facade is visible in a 1938 photo taken by Berenice Abbott for her Changing New York series. The City Theatre was demolished in 1952 and the current building was constructed in 1993.
This building is set to be demolished and replaced with a 21-story Tech hub.
