Description & Building Alterations

This is a six-story mixed use building with a red brick façade between the third and fifth stories. A bracketed white cornice sits above the fifth story. The windows contain darker stone lintels and sill. The bottom two stories show an open windowed façade with white stone. These windows have been altered since the 1940s, as seen in the tax photo. The top story is a rooftop addition with studio windows.

When 111 East 12th Street was first built in 1854 for J. Butler, it served mainly for residential use and storage. By 1914, the building was leased by Oscar Schlegel Manufacturing Company and housed offices, a printing shop, and a stock room. Then in 1923 the entire building was used for light manufacturing.
