Description & Building Alterations

This building was originally a five story tenement and store built in 1871 and designed by Richard Shapter. In 1936 the upper stories were removed leaving it as a one story commercial building as seen in the 1980’s tax photo. In the early 2000’s a five story addition plus penthouse was added to this building.

What is the Building Blocks Project

What does a building mean to someone who lives there? A person who lives on the block? In the neighborhood? In the city? This site presents a wealth of historic information gained from GVSHP’s architectural research survey about the buildings located in the East Village.
