102 Third Avenue | Block : 558 | Lot #29
Description & Building Alterations
Lot 29 is occupied by a five-story, mixed-use, red brick building. The only decorative elements are the dark, black stone lintels and sills. All of the windows line up with Lots 28 and 30 because these lots, owned by Ebenezer Pray, were combined as a manufactory at some point between 1836 and 1853. According to historic maps, the manufactory was divided into three separate lots by 1862.
In 1913, new supports were added and columns replaced granite blocks in the basement. Four years later, window openings in the front and rear walls were cut and enlarged. At the same time, steel I beam lintels were set and new partitions of stud lath and plaster replaced old partitions. In 1924, a one-story extension to the store was erected in the yard. Presently, the five-story building has a storefront on the first floor that looks very similar to its neighbor at 104 Third Avenue. The building is three bays wide and is unadorned. The ground floor serves as an example of an early twentieth century storefront, characterized by the large glass windows and tall sign, where a transom would have existed.
