Description & Building Alterations

The building at 242 East 3rd Street was constructed in 1873 as a five-story tenement building with stores on the ground floor. It was designed by architect A.H. Blankenstein. The brick building is crowned with an impressive pressed metal cornice. A faint outline of “L. M.” can be seen in the shield at the center of the frieze, likely referring to the original owner of the building, Louis Muller. This was the location of  Slug’s Saloon where jazz musician Lee Morgan was shot to death by Helen Morgan on February 19, 1972 (see link at right to GVSHP’s Off the Grid blog post).
