Description & Building Alterations

This old law tenement building was completed in 1889 by architect Rentz & Lange for owner Justus H. Zimmerman along with 340 and 342 East 13th Street. In 1940 the building was modernized to eliminate outstanding building code violations, add new plumbing, electric wiring, and decrease the number of apartments on the first floor from four to three. It is presently five stories in height, four bays wide at the upper stories, and five bays wide at the first floor. The upper part of the facade is symmetrically arranged, the upper stories are clad in brick with stone ornament, and the first floor of the front elevation has been heavily altered. There are round arch windows at the fourth floor. Stone ornament in the upper stories include band courses, lintels and sills. The cornice has been removed.
